Will Basketball Ever Have Three-Digit Jersey Numbers?

Could pro basketball ever allow jersey numbers like 100 or 123? Here's why the top leagues stick to two digits, and why three-digit numbers already make sense for big clubs.

Look at any NBA, NBL or FIBA game and you'll notice something: no one wears a number above 99. In other sports that's not always true. So could basketball ever go to three digits?

The short answer: not at the top level any time soon. At club level, though, it's already happening, and for good reasons.

The Current Rules: 0 to 99

The major rulebooks all land in the same place:

  • FIBA (which the NBL, WNBL and Basketball Australia competitions follow) allows 0, 00 and 1–99.

  • The NBA uses the same range.

  • NCAA college basketball only joined them in 2023. Before then, college players couldn't wear any number containing a 6, 7, 8 or 9, so the jump to 0–99 was a big deal.

That NCAA change shows rules around numbers can move. But going from two digits to three is a much bigger step than unlocking a few extra digits.

Why the Pros Stick to Two Digits

Referee signals. This is the big one. When a referee calls a foul, they show the scorer's table the player's number with their hands: one hand for each digit. Two hands, two digits. A three-digit number simply doesn't fit the system, and redesigning how officials communicate would ripple through every level of the game.

Scoreboards and scoresheets. Score sheets, stat systems and broadcast graphics are all built around two-digit numbers. They could be changed, but nobody has a strong reason to.

Rosters are small. A pro basketball team only has around 12 to 15 players. Even with retired numbers taken out, there's plenty of room in 0–99.

Could It Still Happen?

It's possible, but it would need a real problem to solve. The most likely pressure comes from retired numbers. Franchises with long histories keep taking numbers out of circulation; the Boston Celtics have retired more than 20, and the NBA retired No. 6 across the whole league in 2022 to honour Bill Russell. If that trend keeps building over decades, popular numbers get scarcer.

Even then, the easier fix is more creative use of what's already allowed (00 is still uncommon) rather than a complete rule rewrite. So for elite basketball, three digits is a "maybe one day, probably not soon" idea.

For clubs, it's a different story.

When Clubs Actually Need Three Digits

At club level, three digits happen for practical reasons. Once one club runs dozens of teams across age groups and divisions, giving every player a unique number stops fitting inside 1–99.

That's where the benefits start to stack up:

  • Every player has their own number. No doubling up between the U12s and the senior men's side, which makes registrations, team sheets and photo days easier to manage.

  • Numbers can carry meaning. A club can give each age group or division its own range (say, 100s for juniors and 200s for seniors), so a number tells you where a player belongs at a glance.

  • Jerseys can be passed down cleanly. When a player moves up an age group or leaves, the club knows exactly which numbers are free and which are still in use.

  • Retiring numbers does not squeeze the roster. Clubs can honour life members or club legends without running short of numbers for everyone else.

  • Less admin for volunteers. A clear numbering system means fewer clashes, fewer emails and fewer last-minute reorders before the season starts.

How C2C Can Make This Happen for Your Team

Whether your club wants a classic two-digit roster or a numbering system that runs into the hundreds, the process at C2C comes down to three steps:

  1. Design the look. Open the 3D Product Configurator and build your basketball jersey design in real time, adjusting colourways and layout and checking how the kit looks before you commit to anything. If you'd like some inspiration first, the custom basketball range we offer as a good starting point.

  2. Set up your numbers. For smaller teams, simply add player names and numbers directly in our 3D Product Configurator.

For clubs managing multiple teams, C2C Club Portal’s powerful numbering engine makes it easy to organise and manage numbers by team, age group, or division.

Skip the spreadsheets and manual tracking. Our supercharged tools save you time and make managing player numbers faster, easier, and more organised.

  3. Let players order. Through a private club portal, individual players can order and pay for their own kit, which takes most of the chasing out of the job for volunteers and club admins.

Need two looks from one kit? The same process works for custom reversible basketball jerseys, so a squad can switch between light and dark without ordering a second set. For a club kitting out several teams at once, custom team uniforms built this way keep every design, number range and re-order in one place.

The Bottom Line

Referee signals, scoreboards and small rosters keep the pros at two digits. But for a growing club with hundreds of players, three-digit numbers are a possibility. They're simply the tidiest way to keep everyone organised.

Check with your league first: if your teams play in a FIBA-sanctioned or representative competition, confirm its uniform rules before locking in numbers above 99.
